چکیده

We examine the performance of multiple description coding (MDC) with and without the use of automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocols for packet network communication, in comparison with layered coding (LC). The rate-distortion lower bound of MDC and LC are incorporated into an E-model based performance measure, which accounts for the additional costs of excess rates and delay incurred from using ARQ. The results show that the relative merits of the schemes depend on the values of the packet loss rates and roundtrip-time (RTT). LC is superior for small RTT and unaided MDC is superior for large RTT. For moderate RTT, LC is preferred for small packet loss rates and MDC aided by ARQ is preferred for large packet loss rates. Optimal Coding Subgraph Selection under Survivability Constraint

Nowadays communication networks have become an essential and inevitable part of human life. Hence, there is an ever-increasing need for expanding bandwidth, decreasing delay and data transfer costs. These needs necessitate the efficient use of network facilities. Network coding is a new paradigm that allows the intermediate nodes in a network to create new packets by combining the packets recei...

Reliable Flow Control Coding in Low-Buffer Grid Networks

We consider a grid network where nodes contain small buffers. A packet that faces a crowded buffer in its route will get extra latency and may be dropped. In this paper, we propose a novel flow control protocol called RFCC for grid networks. RFCC tries to reroute delayed packets and utilizes network coding to introduce a configurable amount of redundant information in the network, thereby incre...

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding

Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Robust Video Communication by Combining Scalability and Multiple Description Coding Techniques

Layered coding (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) have been proposed as two different kinds of “quality adaptation” schemes for video delivery over the current Internet or wireless networks. To combine the advantages of LC and MDC, we present a new approach – Multiple Description Layered Coding (MDLC), to provide reliable video communication over a wider range of network scenarios and a...
